Italy 2015 - Lucca

Italy 2015 - Lucca

It was still dark out when we checked out from our hotel in Genoa and made our way to the train station. We were hustling along and I ended up tripping and falling in the street. Luckily there was no traffic around as it was so early. I was uninjured, it was just my pride that was hurt.

We were catching an early morning train to Lucca. The plan was to spend most of the day exploring Lucca and then continuing on to Bologna where we would catch our night train down to Bari. Since we had our luggage with us we had to utilize the luggage check service at the Lucca train station. This service was easy to use and the rates were reasonable.

Lucca is a town in Tuscany which is known for its intact city walls from the Renaissance. The historic centre of the city is still surrounded by these walls which now serve as a city park. Much of the town within the walls is pedestrian and bike friendly which means that traffic is light and makes it easy to tour.

We started off our  visit to Lucca by walking the city walls to get an idea of the layout of the city.

After our walk on the walls we visited Duomo di San Martino which is a beautiful church just within the city walls.

We wandered the streets of Lucca and stopped for lunch in a little cafe which turned out to be one of the best meals of the trip. Unfortunately, we did not write down the name of the restaurant.

We continued to wander around the city taking in the sights. Lucca was a beautiful little Tuscan town.  I loved all the towers and the look of the city and how pedestrian friendly it was. I also enjoyed that it was not very crowded.

We bought a few pastries to take on the night train with us as snacks as we would be missing dinner that night.

I would not hesitate to visit Lucca again.
